"a foam-shadowed hideaway beneath the eternally suspended
monster" - are we talkin' about Gravity's Rainbow?
well, not actually, it's a mural...but I had a momentary flash...
a scene not completely unlike the Don's house at
Gelsomina's wedding in Vineland...
"longhaired short-skirted cuties drifted around in the
sunlight tending the marijuana plants or wheeling
huge trays of things to eat, drink, and smoke."
but here they do it for love instead of money,
but it's kind of a unionist's (and feminist's) nightmare:
none of these chickies are getting paid, none
of them really have an independent life of any
temporal bandwidth that all this is paying for
(do they?), there's no grievance committee...
typical devotional scene, I guess...
the dogs not too different from the humans...
"for every band like this one there were a
hundred or a thousand others like his cousin's
band Beer, doomed to scuffle in obscurity,
energized by a faith in the imperishability of rock 'n' roll,
running on dope and nerve, brother- and sisterhood,
and good spirits."
(sounds like he likes them better, I think I do too)

poetic license makes it Cantor's, which fits in
which resounds with "Cohen's Beauty and Barber"
the Cantor singing, the Cohen making a connection
between hairstylist and priest...
It also has a branch in Las Vegas.
"Over the years Canter's has sold over:
* 2 Million Pounds of Lox
* 9 Million Pounds of Corned Beef
* 10 Million Matzo Balls
* 20 Million Bagels
* 24 Million Bowls of Chicken Soup"
that's a lotta Matzo Balls
I dunno, it may be gratuitous to dwell on the Jewish overtones,
but I wanted to say that despite what that Pfeiffer guy wrote,
I haven't discerned any anti-Semitism in Pynchon's works.
Here, the Jewish nurturance of the nascent rock'n'rollers
on both sides of the Atlantic is mentioned discreetly, and
Vidal Sassoon is brought in as an anti-Fascist Counterforce.
So there!
I haven't found any mention anywhere of feet tattooed
with sandal-simulacra. They do mention that tattooing the
feet is more painful than other areas, which fits with
the original band-members being "tough little grommets"
