hey, my Dad sported these back in the 60s too.
Topanga: http://www.topangachamber.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topanga,_California
"Topanga was first settled in 1839.[4] In the 1920s, Topanga Canyon
became a weekend getaway for Hollywood stars with several cottages
built for that purpose. The rolling hills and ample vegetation served
to provide both privacy and attractive surroundings for the rich and famous.
"During the 1960s, Topanga Canyon became a magnet to many new artists.
In 1965 Wallace Berman settled in the area. For a time, Neil Young
lived in Topanga, first living with producer David Briggs then later
buying his own house. He would record most of his "After the Gold
Rush" album in his basement studio in 1970. Charles Manson had
previously been living in Topanga, where he had briefly befriended
both Neil Young and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Members of
Manson's "family" began their campaign of murder on July 31, 1969 with
the murder of Topanga resident Gary Hinman, a music teacher who had
opened his home to anyone needing shelter.
"The Topanga Corral was a nightclub that featured an eclectic mix of
performers, including then Topanga locals Canned Heat, Spirit, Little
Feat, Spanky and Our Gang, Taj Mahal, Emmylou Harris, Etta James, Neil
Young, and Crazy Horse, Geronimo Black and many others. It is rumored
that Jim Morrison was inspired to write "Roadhouse Blues" about the
drive up Topanga Canyon Blvd to The Corral. Later in the 1970s, after
being destroyed by fire and rebuilt, the club featured many up and
coming bands from the L.A. punk scene. In 1986, the Corral again
burned to the ground and was not rebuilt. Today, many musicians,
artists and actors continue to make Topanga their home."

the commercial free Super Surfin' Marathon -
hee hee, I remember ad-free sweeps or runs or hours
from AOR stations, it never
occurred to me to doubt that they were sacrificing any
real ad potential...

had the genius to meld Bird is the Word with Papa-oom-mow-mow!
Damn, wish I'd thought of that!
Johnny and the Hurricanes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_and_the_hurricanes
"Johnny Paris and his band toured Europe occasionally until
2006, shortly before Paris died. Paris claimed that over 300
musicians played in the band in its fifty years existence."
Ok, now for the quiz:
a) name 5 great homosexual popes who never learned to speak French
b) Those who don't think much of IV: could you write a better book? Please do.
I'll buy a copy.
c) Who is cooler, Doc or Denis? I vote Denis, but not by much.
d) Is there another, better pattern to the confusion around Mickey
than my tripartite division?
e) Where is a good online reference with details of the legendary
David Weisz/MGM 1970 auction?
f) who the heck is David Weisz?
g) Is there ever a time when it would be OK to feed a dog LSD? If you
thought he wanted some, would you automatically be a nutball?
Not that I ever would, really. But I'm interested if anybody else
thinks there might be a case, since dogs are intelligent and people
take them hunting which is also dangerous. LSD is non-toxic
by most standards.
h) Guys: who is more appealing, Shasta, Clancy or Trillium? Or Penny?
I'm thinkin' Clancy, if Pynchon ever licenses the IV universe I will
write a book about her. Or maybe Trillium. Denis would have a big part too.
i) Ladies: is there any male in the book who is exciting, does
Bigfoot hold any allure for instance? Would you stay married
to Mickey?
j) Riggs Warbling. Do you think the quadrille paper points us
to any kind of later-in-life revisionism on the part of the author?
Would he buy this guy a beer? Or is the quadrille paper just
a techie detail and not specifically invocative of the P of GR?
k) "Shr thing," Jade by this point was desperate enough to chirp back.
I liked that sentence. Agree? Disagree?
essay questions:
i) propound on the following
What exactly does Mickey feel guilty about?
Is there anything in Luz's or Boris's statements that sheds any
kind of light on this topic? Should a billionaire developer feel guilty?
If Mickey calls on bikers for bodyguards and the Forces of Stasis
call on vigilantes, is it fair to think in terms of guerilla warfare,
or would proxy warfare better describe the conflict? Is there
a suggestion of how Mickey's wild hair could be related to any
of the societal trends noted in the key passage (about blurring
your sense of self beyond your official skin envelope)?
ii) prepare an argument that Pynchon is actually
a conservative.
Thanks everybody for the responses and your courtesy.
Whew! This much writing is hard work. Fun, though.
I'm outie...
