Page 161:

Doc prods Coy into confessing his activities with the Viggies, the
California Vigilants - an ultra-conservative group (and a painting of
early California history)

Coy re patriotism "Suppose your mom was using smack?"

This was a common enough refrain from the anti-war folks when their
patriotism was under attack. "My country right or wrong" was
countered with "What if your mother was using heroin? Wouldn't you try
to help her?"

********

Doc is confused by this - Coy explains about the US being addicted to
war and how he'd tried to tell the Viggies that but it was too late.
It's implied that yes, that was him at the rally and yes, he'd been
informing (page 122). But then he saw what he'd done by joining
them, so he got out and now he's playing with borrowed horns and
living in Topanga Canyon where he lives

"...lower than a groupie. " He's going to have to do some low work
before he's trusted again.

Coy complains, knows he really doesn't have a choice, sighs, and goes
back to the musicians.

Coy is "...into a complicated head arrangement of 'Samba Do Avião'

This is like a love song to Rio Di Janeiro, about homesickness,
about loving the Christ and the river and the people and returning
there, returning home. It's pretty intense and Coy is using it as a
head-trip to escape his troubles.

And Doc finally watches Coy leave in the "sinister Mercury woodie..."

Doc stays up all night, watching traffic and thinking of Hope and
Amethyst and how Coy isn't dead.

Morning, the thirteenth day of the narrative, Sunday, April 5, 1970.

**** And that, dear reader, is the exact date my darling son,
Isaac, was born in a nice little town up the road apiece. - True. ****
