War bling and the inscrutability of motives

nice.  given his other traits, maybe's he not the inventor
of the Zome.  to try and sort out a "message" landscape that
doesn't interfere too much with the story qua story...maybe
the creativity of the militaristic types clashes with the guilt feelings
of the merchant class ("hey, let's do something really fun with
the billions we just made from torturing and killing thousands
of smallholders and expropriating their tiny fortunes" and the
guy who would normally put that together is sitting there nauseated with
his head in his hands saying "f*ck, dude, 8 thousand guys
trying to surrender and you f*cking plowed them into the dirt
with bulldozers" (to take a random example from a slightly different
time frame)
