I'm in the middle of '2666', and I do not think he is overrated at all.  Going in I was bracing myself for a let-down, but I think he lives up to the hype and then some.  I loved 'The Savage Detectives' as well.

I like discussions of poetry and literature within fiction.  If that's not your thing, Bolano is the wrong writer for you, but the endless discussions of poetry in 'The Savage Detectives' were my favorite part of the novel.
