Quoting the whole sentence,  "This had to be a message from some place  
besides a Pacific island whose name he couldn't pronounce."

I think "besides" is correct if the meaning is "other than."    Like  
the post card is from Shasta but it's not from a Pacific Island it's  
from someplace "besides" that.     Otoh,  if Doc thinks the card IS  
from a place next to some  Pacific island then it would be a typo.     
I'll go with the text not being a typo but it's kind of a toss.
