I also think at this rereading, after IV and Vineland again, and maybe for the first time (for me) that it also means: pot, like butter, sugar, only different and metaphoric for TRP, was largely 'hidden' during the war but only as it is ending...at the Potsdam Conference does it 'surface' again.............

Many fewer mindless pleasures during the war.............
