Hello from the "Remedios varo en la literatura" exhibit at the museo de arte moderno in mexico city, up through december! I'm buying varo postcards, a poster, a mousepad, a cigarette case -- and I don't even smoke! Can somebody remind me of where trp and/or oedipa saw varo's work?

ever read Among the Thugs about soccer hooligans in Britain? scary shit

I wonder if some of it has to do with at some level by those on the
right (or generally) in feeling the crimes of Nazism overshadowing the
crimes of Stalin to such an extent that there is a feeling of
comraderie or nostalgia for as u call it "fascist friendly" elements
in places like Croatia--in the Balkans you have the added complexity
of the recent war with Serbia (who are perceived as perpetrating more
acts of brutality/war crimes at least in the west-- tho Croatia had
done similar if not on the scale of Serbia's--the massacre at
Srebencia and the siege of Sarajevo are remembered more)
So, the references to the Ustashe could be seen not only as a bulwark
against communism and a resurgent Russia but also against the Serbs
(supported by the Kremlin) ,(and at one point the state of Yugoslavia,
too.) and finally, I think there is an anti-western element mixed in,
particularly with Europe and NATO and the increasing demands for the
capture of war criminals, who are believed to be patriots by the
locals. so there's nationalism.
In any event, it is rather sad to see pretty girls wearing the symbols
of an organization that during the war committed such horrifying acts
(which the Serbs would later use as justification for its brutality
in the 1990s)

u should watch Richard Gere in The Hunting Party (seeking out a
Karadzic-type character) for a sense of how Hollywood/US views events
in the Balkans--its really awful, and unintentionally funny
considering in part, the reality where the real Karadzic was "hiding"
in Belgrade.
