start of the page ol' Doc is more worried about Penny than pissed.
That she would shop him (there's that word again, prominent in the
Cyprian sections of AtD)
to the Federales...

(reaching back to page 72-3, ol' Doc has seen some Federales already, enough
to discern a "force-field of contempt" around them for
Californians...perhaps their version
of "surrounding [themselves] with white light"...so I think we are to
take it that he
isn't marrow-terrified of them, although his courage is bolstered by
plenty of weed of course...
but one thing I think detective stories in general do, is "quiz the
custard" which is a phrase
from a detective novel called The Steam Pig, I think, and is the
hero's version of
"quis custodiet ipsos custodes?")

so he seizes on his own preferred linkage to follow (in his own way,
like the FBI,
he has certain usual suspects although one likes to think he is a bit
more flexible
in his thinkingnd...)

But now the section on reports of missing Mickey.
The first thing I thought was Elvis, of course. I guess, Jimmy Hoffa, right...
looking for similar popular missing persons...
John Galt? Judge Crater? Ambrose Bierce?

Missing real estate developer? tryna think of anything at all like that
being in the news.
a) we get a little snapshot somewhere of the type of stuff he's been
building and repenting of
b) what it makes me think of is that guy who made a billion or two
building houses with carports instead of garages, and no basements,
and probably other decadences, but this linkage isn't explicit in the
text
c) there is a mythic aspect to him

Harley Earl Impala, which Jade and Bambi gallop away in, but not
without having left him
a flyer and a note, is apparently a classy ride:
