It's something more than being a precursor, and something less. I
wrote an article on that, which was kindly published by Pynchon
Notes. Let's say that there's a character (name's Ragle Gumm) in TOJ
who can predict where certain missiles will fall, which is more or less
what Slothrop's hard-ons seem to do in GR. There are maps in both
novels, and conspiracies in both novels; the main character must
somewhat escape in both novels. Then TOJ is much smaller and less
complex than GR... yet it's quite clear that TRP had read it while he
was writing GR, and borrowed some ideas.
