Yeah, that male encounter was in The Eye in the Door. And you're right:
those three books are great. In fact, the only thing I DIS-liked in them
were the sex scenes. It seemed to me that Pat Barker was trying too hard
in those scenes; that writing of sex came anything but naturally to her.
Billy Prior's sexual encounters are meant to affirm the vitality and
naturalness of his character, but Barker's descriptions of them seem forced,
stilted somehow. I can still remember a particularly horrible sentence:
"Her pelvis became a cup from which he drank." Ick. The battle scenes are
so much stronger - she writes incredibly well about the horrors of war.
