An association Pynchon probably didn't know about, but it kinda fits:
As a cute kind of hazing thing, electricians like to send new apprentices to the material locker in search of non-existent items: a "skyhook" is one of the standards, along with a "bucket of ohms," and a "left-handed hickey (pipe bender)." A skyhook, in this case, is a joking reference to something that doesn't exist. Kind of like Doc's parents signing into the motel with false names.
