Really? Why would a novelist lat 20th century American novelist set
out to write a work that makes such a point? It's nothing new; it has
been done a million times over. And, his works, with one exception,
have traditional protagonists.

Here they are:

V. Stencil (one could argue that Benny is co-protagonist, though P
writes quest narratives and Stencil's quest carries the themes and
plot). V herself is not the protagonist.
