the falling off of Schoenmaker from the finest frenzy of his idealism
- this decadence is described as undetectable "even by Profane"

BP wouldn't have known Schoenmaker back then.  Interesting that he's
drawn in as a perfect or "unusually keen" observer.

I guess because he is a schlemihl, he is attuned to the difference
between people and things, and also other frontiers?
