Time to pack up, go home

Hey all --
British Columbia has been consumed by wildfires. On July 31st a helicopter
landed in the meadow in front of my house. The forestry guy got out and told
me it was time to go. The smoke plume had been building all day, so it
wasn't a complete surprise. Nonetheless, I neglected to take my computer.
Since I am around a thousand emails behind, and will never catch up, I must
withdraw from hosting Chapter 14.
We (about half-a-dozen people own and live at the ranch) are home (8/9) and
all is well. Not only did the place come through unscathed, but the
firefighters watered our greenhouses and flowerbeds. Peculiar (always good)
things have been happening to us for the 40 years of our ownership, things
for which we have no explanation. How many forest-fire fighters would make
it a point to water greenhouses and plants?

Aw, Dave, don't be so hard on yourself. I've been pretty absent from this
section as well. None of this is gonna be on the final exam, anyway. Joseph
Tracy signed up for the next chapter (Joseph, are you there?), after which,
Chapters 6 and 7 (a long one) are unhosted - so we'll all have to pitch in
and come up with pithy (or outrageous, or stupid or obscure) posts to
provoke conversation.
Here's the sign-up sheet as it stands:
8/9 - 8/22 - Chap. 5 - Joseph Tracy
8/23- 9/5 - Chap. 6 –
9/6 - 9/26 - Chap. 7 - (3 weeks)
9/27 - 10/10 - Chap. 8 - Mike Bailey
10/11 - 10/31 - Chap. 9 - (3 weeks) - Robin Landseadel
11/1 - 11/14 - Chap. 10 -
11/15 - 12/5 - Chap. 11 (3 weeks, 2 hosts)
12/6 - 12/19 - Chap. 12 - Emma Wrigley
Winter break
1/10 - 1/23 - Chap. 13 - Heikki Raudaskoski
1/24 - 2/6 - Chap. 14 - Page
2/7 - 2/20 - Chap. 15 -
2/21 - 3/6 - Chap. 16 -
3/7 - 3/20 - Epilogue
