passing women leads to Rachel's  passage by the same spot, her "brave  
sensual trudging", toward her encounter with Shoenmaker (  literally  
something like pretty maker).

To the dudes on the street , and to the human animal, the sensual  
glory of women or men is wonderfully diverse.  Skin color, noses,  
eyes, lips, breasts, hips and legs, fingers and arms and backs and  
butts- there is a thousand ways to be beautiful and only a fool  
refuses any of them.

Fascism is , among other things, a racist narrowing of the concept of  
beauty and desirability. The Jewish Schoenmaker, while funny and  
offhand is cashing in on a form of cultural fascism targeting Jews.
