I have had this nagging befogged memory, from a college course I took, that a
Shaftesbury was savagely
satirized by Alexander Pope.....................but I was wrong, not having
studied hard enough................
Or maybe Dryden, I learn when I get lucky with serendipitous "research".
[Shakespeare, like Pynchon, connects
to everything].....
Seems Dryden, foreechoing P's ass-falling off when unscrewed joke and Bongo-S
and the mechanical doll....DID satirize
The Earl of Shaftesbury in a work called "The Medall"....Dryden wrote that The
Earl had a faucet installed in his abdomen to drain
ill humors!.....
