I think that OBA's take is more accurate than Le Carre's.  Undermining
an extranational villain who is intent on taking over the world hardly
qualifies as "neo-fascist," particularly when compared with other
adventure-style "spies."  For example, when I was a boy, I never
noticed that in most of the episodes of Mission Impossible, the
Impossible Mission Team's task was to topple a government.
