More Misc. V-2nd. The profaning of The Street

Years ago I took some friends from New Jersey to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. 
Once you get away from the popular paths and into the more interesting 
places, silence engulfs you. My friends were OK for about 20 minutes. Then 
they began freaking out. After 30 minutes, they were begging to go back to 
the (comparatively small) city, to noise and people. I can tolerate cities 
for short stretches, say 2-3 weeks, but after that I crave my pure spring 
water and no people for miles. On the other hand, I haven't had a good 
Reuben in years.

Having grown up and lived almost entirely in Brooklyn, I always feel a rush 
of relief on returning here from even a weekend trip to parts elsewhere in 
the US.  What strikes me is how many people you see on the streets here, as 
opposed to how few people you see on the streets in either the suburban 
wastelands, or freeway-dominated urbs, or small towns, or, of course, rural 
areas.  Where IS everyone?  There's alienation in the crowds of NYC, but its 
flip-side is a welcome, relaxing blanket of anonymity, combined with lots of 
surreptitious, entertaining people-watching.
