Oh, and just for the record, after a little thought—Pynchon's a
Postmodern Writer.
Anyone who's read Moby Dick can find the connections to Gravity's
Rainbow, but the song & dance routines are not really a part of
Melville's style. You can find all sorts of stylistic tropes—
particularly in the medieval meaning of the word—throughout the
author's oeuvre, they simply exceed the limitations of the "Romance"
novel of Hawthorne and Melville. That particular thread is important,
but it's not that important. Menippean Satire is more inclusive, gets
closer to the mark.
But give the boy credit, Pynchon is ultimately responsible for
Pynchon's style, the style that has come to be thought of "Postmodern."
