I think Rich has it right here.  The true slaves in Pynchon's novels
turn their oppression on its head by embracing the oppression and
using that role as its opposite.  The female slave in MD owned by the
Afrikaners (Lustra?) became the active temptress and nihilist, and as
such took on power.  The Herero nihilists has a similar strategy.
Freedom's just another word...
