Today on BookTV, there was a panel (and audience) discussion with Greil Marcus and Werner Sollors on their book, A New Literary History of America.

Near the end, the moderator, a Harvard prof named Amon Habib, I believe, spoke very briefly of double consciousness (in our American life), sourcing it in DuBois' Souls of Black Folk then the psychoanalytic tradition, then saying such "bi-location" was a condition of American life.....
