I wasn't commenting on whether or not TRP made the point, but  
disagreeing with the point. I see no evidence that we've lost the  
'simply human' any more now than at previous points in history.  
There's always the same percentage of humanity and inhumanity applied  
to whatever is happening in the big picture whether it's  
technological or any other -ological. The humane/inhumane or simple  
human/non-simple human indices are constant. It's easy to idealize a  
past we weren't present in, to suggest that had something that has  
been lost. Things are the same blend of fucked and fabulous at all  
times. There is no progress, and there is no regress. Having said  
that, I don't think Pynchon is even making the point you interpret  
his work as making, that something 'more simple' has been lost. His  
art is much broader, more complex, non-preachy, and non-ideological,  
in my opinion.
