Essentially a system designed to function smoothly w/o direct action
of the maker, after the sping has been wound (and of course the clock
being made).
So automata, clockwork people, are essentially the products of humans
"playing God." And this by its very nature arouses fears and
mythologies (theology) akin to the Golem or Frankenstein's monster,
subject that pervade Pynchon's works.
