>From Northrop Frye's The Stubborn Structure, 1970, essays published earlier, I
learn that old Robert 'White Goddess' Graves
wrote a utopian fantasy called "Watch the North Wind Rise" (published same year
as 1984, which was 1948,I believe)
which portrayed a goddess-centered matriarchal society............
I also learned---Frye has a chapter called 'Varieties of Literary
Utopias'---that there were 19th century "industrial utopias",
one being "A Crystal Age" by one W.H. Hudson, showing crystal as an industrial
metaphor before "We" and, surely, others
including TRP.
Let Northrop tell this tale:
'We do find, in fact, a type of utopian satire based on the theme of cyclical
return: contemporary civilization goes to pieces
with an appalling crash---[Trespassers, anyone?]---and life starts again under
primitive conditions...the theme enters the Graves
book referred to earlier.......................
Stuff in this book on Yeats' Tower, on Romantic excess and much, much more....
