viewing the first few episodes of the TV production of the Le Carre
novel from 1980 I couldn't help but think of Cyprian's world (erect
penises all around--do like the line from AtD) of the homoerotic world
of spycraft. A world filled with men in shadows. Maybe there is a
special quality to the British form. Did they think to hire those who
would not be blackmailed by covetous women while abroad fulfilling Her
Majesty's whims? Or from evidence that these men were all oxbridge
chums, a bit of buggery fun amongst the quads and courts of King's or
Queens' (pace Mr. Fry) that stuck for some among the long lashed and
lovely boys in Istanbul or some such.

Ruskies had their share. Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria liked fucking men,
