the epigraph: M: What is going on then? What's going down? What's happening?
W: A man is being made. A man is being formed. 

So in my Faust pony I learn that this exchange happens when M comes
into W's lab while he is creating a homunculus in a tube! (Had no idea).
A few stanzas later the homonculus greets them!

Which brings up as metaphor (for Gaddis) that this is a not-full-size man,
that 20th Century preoccupation of a diminished humanity..........Cf. [Man
Wtihout Qualities, P's preoccupation in V. of the inanimate taking over
the animate] 

And also brings up artificial life, of course, from the mechanical ducks
through test-tube life........................
