Authenticity in the 50s in America
....one of the biig themes of the sociologists (by being said to
be absent)...............and

someone---was it John Gardner?---once said that Existentialism,
a philosophy that might be called a metaphysics of the authentic,
was a fad because it only arose because the times were inauthentic. 

And I remember mailer writing of the time
and creating a  worldview full of a belief
in spontaneity..........

Because none existed in society.  
So, what is the relation, if any, between authenticity and all that
isn't in TRec?
