The ape and the mentioning of vivsection earlier with Sinisterra recalls Dr  
Moreau

Wells wrote that in 1896 and Dr Moreau was a vivisectionist who got exposed
before he retreats to his island trying to mix science with religion  
or "the law"

Gaddis certainly was aware the zeitgeist back in Gwyon's day
