The cops already knew that Sportello was at the place of action.

Perhaps too simple, but that's how I understand it.

Nikolaus Stingl too. In his German translation (p. 111) it says:

"Die Cops haben uns gesagt, sie lassen die Anschuldigungen fallen, wenn 
wir aussagen, dass du am Tatort warst, dabei wussten sie das ohnehin 
schon, was konnte es also schaden ..."
