Interesting quote from "Slaughterhouse-Five" in the article about the
question of the function of the novel:
"The master of ceremonies asked people to say what they thought the
function of the novel might be in the modern society":
One critic said, 'To provide touches of color in rooms with all-white
walls.' Another one said, 'To describe blow-jobs artistically.'
Another one said, 'To teach wives of junior executives what to buy
next and how to act in a French restaurant.'
Even more interesting is the translation into German:
"(...) und ein Kritiker sagte: "Um Farbflecke in einem voellig
weissgetuenchten Zimmer anzubringen." Ein anderer meinte: "Um
Duesenflugzeuge kuenstlerisch zu beschreiben." Und wieder ein anderer
sagte: "Um den Frauen von juengeren Geschaeftsfuehrern beizubringen,
was sie als naechstes kaufen und wie sie sich in einem franzoesischen
Restaurant zu benehmen haben."

No. 1 and No. 3 are absolutely ok, but what the f.u.c.k is No. 2?
