Yes, the smell of smoke and rum mixes there in the bars.
"Man" is an interjection here. Normally there should be a comma, but
this is a kind of stream-of-consciousness syntax with someone (not the
narrator) saying about the firecrackers, "guarter of a stick of
dynamite, _man_".
