Predestination logic is an extension of Luther's teaching that salvation was via "grace," a pure gift from God, not earned in any way by man.  Calvinism equates the decision to believe/accept this grace with human action, thus predestination functions to make this act of believing involuntary.  Calvinism essentially codifies a completely fated world, set in motion like a machine from before the advent of time.

Right. But Christianity's free-will problem really goes all the way
back to the Garden (and really back to the fall of Lucifer). An
Omniscient, Omnipotent God capriciously creates beings and worlds
destined for suffering and Death. Nice guy, that God.
