GR translations: except for William the very first

it's a very involved sentence. certainly that spiritual meaning is driven at.
the primary action, seeing the Hand in the sky, is distributed over
all the clauses, and certainly this points (like the Hand) to the
meanings you're explicating.
I'm also pointing to William the very first's eventual return to
England as being a physical fact which is also intended to be referred
to.
Just as young Tyrone has now returned to England, at least temporarily
escaping that Doom that apparently has met all the American
Slothrop's, or perhaps (shudder) bringing it with him...
