I never heard it, nor of it, till Marie taught me it back in the 70s.
Nor ever interpreted it that way before now. Wouldn't the memory of
such an evening be happy? For both of them? Is she really serious
about all those reservations? Yes, he's a little forward, but...
Couldn't the relationship progress to something lasting from there?
It's not necessarily jolly, any more than Blueberry Hill, I guess.

How serious are the interpreters?
somebody on laugh in (the late, great Alan Sues? no, Henry Gibson,
right?) did a Secret Service reading of "Santa Claus is Coming to
Town" (you better watch out!) that didn't ruin the song forever. But
things are forever being canonized and decanonized...
Maybe next Christmas "Midnight at the Oasis" will replace BICO. I've
never met a guy who'd object to that, although maybe there's a whiff
of colonialism ("send your camels to bed")?
