Question: "Congratulate this"

I'm going to suggest THIS about THAT....

Yes, TRP is not even close to being a writer whose dialogue is a great 
strength. 
We might name some writers, but.................not him

And, he writes some bad--stiff, irreal--- dialogue. We might name some.

Yet, in this regard, he does get some speech bits right, I think. He hears
something in some dialogue which stands out---like he notices other things.

For example: "Yeahp"....and "din't"....[is that it? ]

They stand out 'cause his dialogue doesn't.....imho.

A man digging holes.

Man says, "Congratulate this."

Not knowing much about these two, and minus a hand gesture, we might
assume that "this" is a comeback, like, "Suck my dick, asshole." or
"Kiss my ass, asshole."

But we can not make this assumption here.

A problem in Pynchon's writing; his ear is weak and so are his choices
about using speach acts. A bigger problem is inherent in Inherent
Vice, that is, his narrative voice slides into this weak ear and tells
the tale. This is evident in V. as well, and in Pynchon generally
(even his essays suffer from it). It's not ambiguity, it's bad
writing.
