Again Book TV. Today, H. W. Brands, who also wrote a book on the Age of
Gold, is talking at the Pritzker Center about his newest book American Colossus:
American Capitalism 1865-1900 and he sez:

From this period American economic growth is linked with the
military-industrial complex all the way to the present......

He also predicts that America will have no more wars (as we have had) because it
is broke......

Adams lost his innocence if not all privilege, took up his part in the
struggle to confront exploitation of the weak and disenfranchised.
From his experience with slavery and the family's position on that
issue during the Civil War, Adams is now inclined to reform
journalism.

On September 24, 1869, the price of gold crashes spectacularly,
exposing a scheme involving financiers Jay Gould and James Fisk as
well as President Grant's brother-in-law, a man named Corbin.

Adams supports the silver backers — primarily small businessmen,
laborers, debtors, and farmers — because he is wary of the control of
bankers and other gold capitalists, whom Henry calls gold-bugs.
