I found this essay an excellent introduction to the novel and to the
saint-martyr themes in TR. " Recognizing Gaddis'  'Recognitions' " by
Peter William Koenig. The essay is supported with Gaddis's notes and
the author cites one of our favorite scholars of American Romance,
Tony Tanner. It is a brief Introduction and may be a waste for those
deep into Gaddis. Koenig notes that Gaddis is writing in the tradition
of Hawthorne and Melville, an American satiric Romance in other words.
Peter & Paul...but Stephen may be more....authentic...a soul in every
stone.
