The theme of lack of ability to exercise our full humanity is,
perhaps, THE overarching theme of The Greening of America,
1970.......should have noted and now listed some
clear  phrasings and insights but here is one related to 
the thematic word that is the book we are reading. It is
typical: 
 
Charles Reich writes of the narrowness of the roles we
have to live within in society. About a sophisticated young lawyer
[Reader, he was one] praised for lawyerly skills he sez:

"His role self accepts the praise, but his true self withers from
lack of recognition......"
