I don't know enough about the book to defend my take, really, but...
the big O's ambitions exceed his talents? and he doesn't deal with it well?
that's just so familiar to me, I can't help but sympathize.

he's not Prince Hamlet, no, but he will serve to swell the action in a
scene or two
