Of course, Eliot has in mind that he (Prufrock) is, is many ironi
ways, Hamlet. And, Otto, one could argue, is both Prufrock and Hamlet.
It is the Hamlet in him that is more interesting. He is, like the
Prince, a playwright. Of course, Hamlet, while he can not act the part
he was born for, King, is a great actor and a great playwright. In a
parody of the Revenge Tragedy, Hamlet, who may not swell a progress
for a killer king, re-wrights/writes or revises a scene or two, even
one written by the killer King, and in this Act/act kills G&R. Otto, a
poor player who struts, a poor playwright who never had a Yorik to
ride upon and discover wit from, reminds us too, of Joyce's young
artist until we see his dust plug a bunghole enough times to
understand that WG has made him no fool, no Hamlet, no prince, but a
jackass.
