This passage also might remind of the passage about the 
pile of shirts offered one in AtD---the closest you will come to
pure anarchy or sumpthin' like that sez the other..............

A fine example of the imagery P uses throught the novel; here the
sweaters, pale and heaped without care,  evoke a paranoid and
accidental (or not) gesture of opposites (to embrace or to slink).
Pointsman's obsession with Pudding, his plotting, his control, his
seniority is contrasted with this fantacy.
