GR translation: lens openings forever changing

here, it is the townspeople (the constable of whom was just described
in the action of failing to stop a would-be jumper (resident of the
loony bin that the White Visitation housed) from falling off the cliff
- and that, the suicide, was the only break in the small town monotony
of watching tourists "overflowing" from nearby beach resorts, and
listening to Flotsam and Jetsam who I bet Weisenburger or someone has
traced down to actual radio personalities doing musical renditions of
news items...) whose lenses are opening and closing, so I think the
denotation would be the actual eye-lenses responding to the
ever-changing light (poetically linked to synesthetically similar
changes in the sea breeze) , but of course the mention of
lens-openings connotes cameras also.
