this would help explain the flowery way Pynchon chooses to say (ask) was 
the room getting darker.

By the way while on this paragraph does anyone have any idea why the 
bedlamites were weeping over the modulation from the E major chord to a 
G sharp minor one, which isn't really of modulation at all?

Or was the lack of a key change the point?
