I'm forwarding this to the List as well 'cos I suspect just aboiuyt
everyone will have a better answer than i will, so ... uh, yeah,
though I'm with you in assuming that there's some specific idiom--or,
@ least, context (rosewater vs. lime in yr gin and/or tonic?)--and,
not so much the mixture, but the contrast (yin/yang?) seems the issue
of interest and/or importance or whatever there, but ...

... but there are just so damn many such instances, and not just in GR
alone (see also AtD + IV, in particular), and the particular colors do
seem to have a particular significance, bot in Pynchon in particular
and in the history of color (chemical or otherwise) in general ...
