So, The Recognitions was finished in 1949 but not published until 1955. Same old 
story of publishing.
Worse than most 'cause it was the repressive fifties? (But it was a booming 
postwar decade full of
pent-up demand, as the econs say. Publishing did bloom too)

Decades later, a guy compiled a whole book about the stupid, incomprehensible 
reviews and pieces about it
when it came out.
