Pitirim sees Modern Western History this way,....[one can be reminded of some McLuhan
themes:

Very abbreviatedly: he labels the intellectually secure world of the Christian Middle Ages
IDEATIONAL, meaning controlled by the Christian ideas FIRST, all perceptions flowing
from that....from music of the spheres, through Great Chian of Being, from Dante thru
Henry Adams' Virgin and cathedrals.....(my examples)

After a short transition period which he labels Idealistic--- in which the above
slowly melds with the following, our current epoch, since shortly after the Renaissance
(although the times were changing even then):

He labels as SENSATE, meaning perception, like the birth of real science, started with the senses
and all our art, all our selves, have grown and are built with sensate perceptual growth.................
he even throws off the notion that science (and its handmaiden, math)  until the 20th Century, was another
natural-like simple accumation of fact.............a theme I think may be part of AtD's meaning as I reread.....
