well, Laura, here's the snag - i don't read much contemporary russian output

but of the latest books i will strongly recommend this woman: 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariam_Petrosyan - her "The House That", 
currently in translation by Andrew Bromfield (check him out, btw - 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Bromfield - as the translator, he's 
excellent), is very good indeed
