Thematics of AtD in other books

I was trying to think of other books - by authors from TP's cohort more or less - that deal with some of the same themes that are in AtD (religion, science/ tech, etc) and I picked up a copy of City of God by E.L. Doctorow that I've had sitting on the shelf for a long time and realised that it has some themes that coincide. It then occurred to me that I haven't seen his name come up on the list very much, if not at all, as compared to Roth or DFW.
Do y'all read ELD? If  you have read City of God, what did you think?

And speaking of authors who I've never seen mentioned here but might seem to fit in, what about Douglas Coupland? I confess I haven't read any of his books (I picked up Jpod and saw the pages in binary code and put it back on the shelf). How does he rank on the p-list?
