Elmore Leonard? Get Real!

Simple common sense Get Real question of all: Who do you think are among our 
greatest contemporary (American, I guess to match this piece) writers?   Pynchon,
Delillo, McCarthy?, others?......
 
Or internationally, Grass? Saramago? Who?
 
Can some--a lot?--of what you think is great in these writers be because they
illumine our whole world, our modern selves, human nature in profound ways 
for you? Akin to Joyce, Dickens, Conrad, Austen, and others further back?
I said 'akin'. 
 
Can THAT be really said of Leonard---in the largest sense?
